Crushed Snow 2007

Categorizing fear is calming, Jenny Holzer Truism from Venice Biennale 1990

With the crushed snow exhibition I was thinking about the idea of flow, of a current that underscores everything; a pull, a yearning. I am working in white, which holds an awkward silence for me, it has a haunting stillness, pure and mute each piece appears like a frozen bud. Made of white cement or fired clay covered in intonaco fresco plaster, each section is coated in a ‘crushed snow’ of marble dust. The dust affords the work a fragile beauty, when it is used in the drawings they hover on the page, the waxed paper buckling with each dust mound. They appear like remains or markings that might be traces of a human presence, in the sculpted forms this presence is made keener by their own shadows.
